City break in Graz

A City Wrapped in Christmas Magic

When fairy lights twinkle above the streets, the scent of punch and seasonal treats drifts through the old town, and historic squares become charming meeting places, a very special time begins in Graz. Numerous Christmas markets are located within just a few minutes’ walk of one another, and each tells its own festive story. The city’s Christmas heart beats on the Main Square, where the Christmas tree in front of the illuminated Town Hall sparkles with more than 25,000 lights. The Winter Wonderlend on Mariahilferplatz and the Christmas market on Karmeliterplatz offer a more urban and creative atmosphere, while the Aufsteirern Christmas Market on Schlossberg combines Styrian traditions with breathtaking views across the city’s sea of lights.

Graz is more than just a Christmas market. It is an entire city filled with light, festive flavours and memorable moments, inviting visitors to discover, linger and enjoy.

Christmas Magic in Graz

Graz sparkles during Advent. Twinkling Christmas lights illuminate the streets and squares, while the spectacular projection on the Town Hall transforms its façade into a giant Advent calendar.

One of the season’s most iconic attractions celebrates a special anniversary in 2026: for 30 years, the famous Ice Nativity Scene in the Landhaushof courtyard has delighted visitors. More than 35 tonnes of crystal-clear ice are transformed into a unique work of art, creating an especially magical atmosphere after dark.

More Advent Magic
Around Graz, visitors can enjoy a variety of memorable Advent experiences: LUMAGICA creates a magical world of light with around 300 illuminated installations, while the Stübing Open-Air Museum brings Christmas traditions from days gone by to life. For winter fun, the Graz Winter World offers 3,000 m² of ice-skating space, creating a festive atmosphere that is varied, enjoyable and perfect for the whole family.
A Design Station
In the City of Design, even the railway station is an attraction in its own right. The entrance hall of Graz Main Station was transformed by artist Peter Kogler into a striking biomorphic artwork covering 2'355 m². The flowing graphic design blurs the hall’s edges and angles, creating the illusion of movement, particularly after dark. In recognition of its outstanding architectural concept, the station received the Brunel Award for excellence in railway design.

Kunsthaus Graz
The futuristic Kunsthaus Graz has been one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks since Graz’s year as European Capital of Culture in 2003. Known as the «Friendly Alien», it brings together art and architecture in a truly distinctive way. Its unique organic design and fascinating exhibitions continue to captivate visitors.

The museum’s façade features almost 1'000 fluorescent rings that create changing patterns after dark. In keeping with its commitment to sustainability, a large proportion of the building’s energy is generated by solar panels on the roof. Inside, the museum showcases contemporary art from the past five decades, making it a rewarding stop for art and architecture enthusiasts alike.
